Academic Success Skills
Study skills | Note taking | Test taking
Does your teen have the study skills they need to excel in a competitive academic environment? Or do you sometimes worry that they’ve never really learned how to learn, and don’t understand how to study effectively?
Most students are told to “study” for tests and quizzes, but are never taught how to learn and master new material on their own. Unfortunately, recent research on college students shows that most of them don’t know how to study strategically, and end up relying on improvised study methods and ineffective study behaviors that don’t lead to true mastery of the material.
Students who learn more effective study strategies feel less stressed about school, more confident about their ability to do well on tests and exams, and are able to earn better grades…while still having a life outside of school.
And over the long term, being able to quickly and confidently learn new material will differentiate them from their peers and impact their ability to succeed…not just in their academic life, but also in their professional life as well.
How we can help:
We work 1:1 with our students to help them discover the most effective ways to study and retain information, and find ways to stay engaged with the material they’re learning in school and at home so that they can get the most out of their academic experience.
Some of the areas we can work on together include…
- Learning ways to stay focused and engaged in class
- Developing effective note taking strategies
- Creating memory tools and strategies to help students understand and retain new concepts
- Learning the best ways to study for tests (…and which strategies to avoid)
- Discovering which study strategies to use for different subjects and classes
- Learning how and when to ask questions, and how to get unstuck on difficult problems
- Ways to cope with test anxiety and feel more confident on exams
- How to self-advocate and proactively use teachers, classmates, and and other learning resources to your advantage

Students who learn effective study skills are able to handle more challenging courses in high school and college, earn better grades with less stress, and feel more confident in their ability to reach their academic goals.
I definitely think having a study plan for exams has helped significantly. This is his first year with an AP class, so I don’t know what his study plan would have been, but I do know this – it is wonderful to see him studying days in advance, in chunks, rather than waiting until the day before.
I just wanted to give you an update on my studying. I feel like you gave me superpowers!! I worked on the interactive questions and the OWLs Monday and today. I was confused on part of it but read the examples a few times and it totally made sense! I am so excited for school now! Thank you so much 🙂
Wanted to let you know Vincent had a really good final exam performance on all of his finals. Of the five finals he had he got 4 A’s and one B. His GPA was a 4.0 and his numerical was 100.0 for the Semester. He was extremely well organized and prepared and the mood in the house before and after was very low to no anxiety..and there were no all nighters needed! 🙂
