Executive Functioning Skills

Organization | Time Management | Focus

Does your student have the skills they need to stay on top of everything without your support?

Or do you sometimes see them procrastinating on important projects, losing track of time, forgetting deadlines, struggling to avoid distractions, staying up late to finish assignments at the last minute, or having a hard time staying organized? (Or all of the above?)

These are all signs that your student could benefit from improving their executive functioning skills.

These skills can have a major impact on students’ performance in high school, college, and beyond. In fact, studies suggest that conscientiousness plays a bigger role in students’ success in school than their IQ.

These skills can be learned. However, most students don’t have enough support at school to help them develop these skills, and have a hard time accepting advice from their parents. So, unless they have the time and energy to focus on learning these strategies on their own, students often end up lacking these crucial skills.

How we can help your student:

Our coaching sessions are focused on helping “smart but scattered” students learn ways to organize and manage their space, time, and daily responsibilities as effectively as possible.  By working 1:1 with each of our students, we can help them create customized strategies and systems that fit their personality and preferences, so they can continue using them for years to come. Some of the areas we can work on together include…

  • Setting up effective organization systems to keep track of schoolwork and personal belongings
  • Setting up a calendar or agenda to keep track of due dates, assignments, and extracurricular activities
  • Being able to to plan ahead for upcoming deadlines and complete work before the last minute
  • Creating daily routines that make it easier to get started with homework independently, get to sleep on time, and get up in the morning
  • Prioritizing work more effectively, so there’s less overwhelm and it’s easier to know where to begin
  • Increasing time awareness and becoming more intentional about spending time on things that matter
  • Getting better at avoiding distractions and reducing procrastination

When students learn these skills, they immediately feel less overwhelmed and more confident in their ability to plan ahead and achieve their goals. Seeing students follow through independently can also help parents feel more confident in their student’s ability to keep up with schoolwork on their own, and manage all of the demands they will face in college.

quotation marksI have definitely seen improvements in the last couple of weeks!  Aiden seems to be more organized in terms of knowing when assignments are due. He also seems to be more proactive in working on them sooner than before, and he isn’t procrastinating as much.

She, without prompting, made and organized a school supply list. She then laid it out and has it ALL organized. Someone obviously has stolen my daughter’s body.

Sometimes I feel like I don’t have time for a coaching session, but that is a mistake.  It is always SO helpful. I end up feeling noticeably happier, more focused, and feeling so much better about my life!
