College Transition

Standing Out | Getting In | Succeeding When You Get There

Are you confident your teen is ready to succeed when they get to college? Or are you sometimes concerned about the responsibilities that will come with living on their own, and feeling a bit unsure if they have all the skills they need to succeed on campus?

Succeeding in college is different than succeeding in high school. And a lot of students aren’t fully prepared for everything that’s going to change when they become truly independent. Figuring out how to structure their time outside of class, plan ahead and stay on top of their assignments, manage the responsibilities that they come with living on their own, and find time to take care of themselves…while still having a healthy social life and enjoying their experience in college…can be a huge challenge!

Students who learn effective strategies to handle life in college early on will be much more likely to thrive on campus, succeed in their classes, graduate on time, and receive competitive internships and job offers.

How we can help:

We work 1:1 with college students to develop plans for how they can succeed in their classes and stay on top of their priorities, so that they can have an enjoyable, successful college experience.

Some of the areas we can work on together include…

  • Preparing for orientation and the move to campus
  • Helping students choose a major and/or minor, and design their ideal class schedule
  • Developing effective daily and weekly routines for getting to class on time, eating well, exercising, doing laundry, getting enough sleep, etc.
  • Identifying and taking advantage of campus services (tutoring, mentoring, career center, and academic advisors)
  • Learning how to review and interpret syllabi at the start of a new class, and use them to create effective study plans for each class
  • Setting up effective calendar systems students can use to see all of their important due dates at a glance and plan ahead more effectively for papers and exams
  • Creating an effective weekly study schedule to help students master the material as they go, and eliminate the need to cram before midterms and finals
  • Helping students make connections on campus and get involved in meaningful activities
  • Setting aside time to proactively seek out and apply for internships, part-time jobs, and research assistantships
  • Tracking and monitoring grades so students can see exactly how they’re doing and know they’re on track to reach their goals and graduate on time

When students learn how to effectively manage their time and priorities in college, they feel a lot less stressed and more confident that they’re on top of everything, which gives them the ability to relax and enjoy their college experience without worrying that they’re dropping the ball. As a result, they are more likely to graduate with a higher GPA, get better internships and jobs, and start off on the right foot in their career and professional life.

quotation marks

We know these skills will be invaluable to her college and career successes.  Most importantly, you helped her get through this period without overwhelming stress.  We will all be forever grateful!

quotation marksI believe last semester was her best ever. I think she is finally enjoying college and in the process made straight “A’s” for the very first time. Half way through the semester she indicated that she should have taken a fifth class because she had some idle time. No one could have anticipated idle time with Bio Chem included in a full load! I told her to enjoy it.

quotation marks

I can see so many changes in her and feel so thankful –I think she is really going to be ok — in college and beyond!!
